Draguignan is a French city in the Var department of France. It is located just 42 Km away from St. Tropez and 80 Km away from Nice. Draguignan was originally a Roman fort built in the Middle Ages. But in the 17th century the military barracks were removed. Now the town mainly features the clock tower belonging to the 17th century. It has amazed tourists with attractions like Museum of Artillery, Museum of “Arts et traditions populaires,” Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial, the Eglise St Michel and Eglise Notre-Dame du Peuple.
Draguignan which was developed in the middle ages as a fortress at the bottom of the hill is now home to the military barracks of the French army. It has some wonderful museums which have unique collection of antiques, ceramics and archaeological objects.
Some of the famous sights in Draguignan are:
- Museum of Artillery- The Museum of Artillery houses some of the best artillery collections of Napoleonic wars, World War I, World War II and Indochina wars.
- Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial- It is cemetery in memory of American soldiers who sacrificed their life in the Second World War.
- Musée des Traditions Provencales- The museum gives us information of the history of the region as well as on the industries related to silk manufacturing, cork, wine and olive production.
If you plan to fly into Draguignan, you have to land yourself into Toulon-Hyères Airport. However, the best way to move around in the city is on foot. Several local buses also run between Draguignan and other local destinations. There is a little train which runs between the town centre and the beaches. Taxis are also available for moving around in the city.
